Opposition Demands Inquiry After Budget Figures Are Revised

The opposition has called for an independent inquiry after the finance department confirmed a second revision to this year’s budget figures in two weeks, narrowing the expected surplus by almost a third.

Government ministers said the changes reflect late data from regional offices and do not alter the overall plan. They agreed to brief a parliamentary committee on Thursday.

Economists said revisions of this size are not unusual but that two in quick succession leave less room for error. The committee is expected to publish its findings next month.
