New Data Rules Give Users More Control of Their Information

New data rules that take effect next month will require companies to explain clearly what personal information they collect and to let people delete it on request.

Privacy advocates welcomed the change, saying it gives users practical control over their data. Industry groups said the rules will add costs, particularly for smaller firms, and asked for a longer transition period.

Regulators said they will focus first on guidance rather than penalties. Users will be able to submit requests through a new online form from the first of the month.
