Opinion: Why Local Elections Matter More Than You Think

Councils decide on housing, transport, parks and bin collections, yet turnout in local elections is often the lowest of any vote. That is a missed opportunity for the people who live with those decisions every day.

When fewer voters take part, decisions are made by smaller groups and the results are harder to challenge. Small changes in turnout can decide who runs a neighbourhood for years.

Checking who is standing, reading local manifestos and turning up on the day takes less time than most people expect. It is also the most direct way to shape the place you live.
