Council Votes to Fast-Track Cheaper Housing Near Rail Stations

City councillors approved a plan on Tuesday night that allows taller apartment blocks within a ten-minute walk of any rail station, a change supporters say will bring thousands of homes to market within three years.

Opponents argued the plan puts pressure on schools and parking and called for a binding review after twelve months. The mayor said that review will go ahead and that the results will be published in full.

Housing groups welcomed the vote but warned that approvals alone will not lower rents. Construction firms said they expect the first projects to start early next year if funding is confirmed.
