Several unseeded players reached the second round on the opening day of the Open, picking up straight-set wins on a bright, breezy afternoon.

The crowd favourites moved through comfortably, but one seed was pushed to a deciding set before advancing. Organisers said attendance on the first day was the highest in a decade.

Play continues tomorrow with a full schedule of matches on every court.
